News: Semi slams into bus carrying HS football players on I-20

The accident happened Friday afternoon near the intersection of I-20 and U.S. Highway 281 in Santo.

SANTO, TX - Authorities said two drivers were hospitalized following a wrong-way crash between a tractor-trailer and a charter bus In Palo Pinto County Friday afternoon, NBC DFW reports.


According to investigators, a man was driving a Volvo tractor-trailer eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near U.S. Highway in Santo at about 2 p.m.


The semi crashed into a charter bus from the Gunter ISD that was on the way to a high school football playoff game in Abilene.  32 students, staff members and faculty members were on board the bus at the time. 

The 64-year-old semi driver was taken to Weatherford Regional Hospital but no details were released on his condition.  The 41-year-old bus driver was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.  No one on the charter bus was injured in the crash.

The westbound lanes of I-20 were shut down for several hours for the investigation.

Investigators said the semi driver may have suffered a medical issue that resulted in driving in the wrong direction.
